Hopes and Plans

My general hopes for this reading log as I begin are three-fold:

  1. to write more about what I’m writing, in an attempt to
  2. temper and focus my manic desire to read more instead of concentrating on what I’m reading and therefore
  3. develop and expand my responses to my reading before they slip away

Not mentioned, and perhaps not as important, is (4) write as if someone may be reading and interested.

More concretely, I would like to:

  1. contemplate what I’m reading as I’m reading it
  2. post memorable sections and quotations from my reading material
  3. make lists of books I want to read, and indicate why
  4. summarize and review books I’ve finished reading
  5. analyze smaller works of literature, such as poems and essays
  6. work my way through a long work or collection in small installments

To begin:

We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake, not by mechanical aids, but by an infinite expectation of the dawn, which does not forsake us in our soundest sleep. I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by a conscious endeavour.

— H. D. Thoreau
